PROCESS
Initial moodboard for PBS idents.
When reading PBS Kids' brand guidelines, there's a paragraph that talks about keeping the visuals simple. Their justification is that simpler visuals are easy to remember, and allow kids to draw it themselves. With that in mind, the moon and star characters were purposely illustrated to look simplistic.
Initial storyboard for ident one.
At this stage, another character wasn't considered until further concept development, and originally, the moon was meant to be Earth.
The moon and star both have their own character rigs with arms, side views, and expressions, allowing for the animator to tell a story without talking or using narration. This works to tell the story visually.
